Innovative design tool for secondary settling tanks and software for CFD-simulations

Optimised tank hydraulics are the key to an increase of the capacity of secondary settling tanks. That’s how the effluent quality, mainly suspended solids, COD and phosphorus, can be improved and sludge overflow can be avoided. By using the software hydrograv proload.cfd developed by hydrograv it becomes possible to explore the hydraulic situation in a tank by oneself. Designers of a new tank receive comprehensive support for the geometric layout.

The software dimensions the clarifiers of a waste water treatment plant on its own applying the German design rule ATV-DVWK-Arbeitsblatt A131 and requiring only a few input parameters regarding loadings and general geometric outline. Afterwards own simulations provide the opportunity to refine and to optimise the generated basic geometry. On the basis of the simulation results designers are able to guarantee the tank’s functioning with greater security than if they would only follow the design rule.

Operators of WWTP, for another, are enabled to optimise the ongoing operation of their plant. On the one hand simulations with current loading data reveal the present situation. On the other hand serial simulations with a variation of the input parameters allow to predict the behaviour of the plant at a broad range of loadings. Since sludge displacement within the system of secondary treatment is taken into account it is possible to examine operating strategies at transient loading situations and to optimise the biologic sewage treatment as a whole.
Thereby a major breakthrough is achieved in the operation of secondary settling tanks and biological waste water treatment plants as a whole: the users obtain deep insight into the processes in the tank, predictions about the tank’s behaviour at different loadings will be much more substantiated. This allows for early counteraction at undesirable situations.
